Registration

"REGISTRATION" is different from a person's membership "GRADE".

A personal member’s grade of membership indicates his/her attainments in the VM profession and may be described in the following general terms:

Associate Member (interested in VM, may be working towards Member)
Member (MIVMA) (full professional standing, competent to practice VM)
Fellow (FIVMA)   (recognised as a leader in the VM profession)
Honorary Life Fellow    (HonFIVMA) (exceptional recognition for outstanding and sustained contribution to the VM profession)

However, these grades do not indicate any specialist skills for particular kinds of VM practice. The Institute recognises that, for some kinds of VM work, specialist skills are required and the community (individuals and organisations) looks to the Institute, as an independent professional organisation, for guidance in identifying VM service providers who have skills appropriate for such work.

Therefore, in addition to his/her grade (but distinct from it), a Member or Fellow may have been granted extra recognition because he/she has satisfied specialist criteria in a particular aspect of VM practice. The Institute describes such specialist recognition as “registration”, because those who meet the specialist criteria are included in the "Register of Specialist Practitioners”.

About Registration

Registration may be granted for only three years at a time, and it may be renewed by the registrant demonstrating that he/she is continuing to practice in the specialist field and that he/she has maintained the specialist expertise through continuing professional development in the field.

Because names may be added to the Register (and deleted from it) at any time, it is important that any copy of the Register printed or obtained for one assignment or purpose should be discarded immediately after use, with a new copy obtained next time one is needed.

The Institute recognises that this kind of special recognition, over and above that denoted by the grade of personal membership, may be appropriate for a number of kinds of VM practice. However, since registration was introduced in 1999, only one kind of specialist practice has been covered by registration and that is the facilitation of stakeholders participating in a VM study.

Since the advent of the 2007 Australian Standard on Value Management (AS 4183:2007 - supersedes AS/NZS 4183:1994) there has been increasing recognition that additional categories of Registration may be warranted. These are likely to emerge following the Institute's important strategic conference in May 2010 and the associated Special General Meeting.

For each category of registration, the Register is required to detail the assessment criteria for the category, together with statements that set out clearly what a category of registration means and what it does not mean, as the basis for providing confidence to members of the community who use the Register.
