Personal Membership

What "Personal Membership" is

Personal membership of the Institute recognises an individual’s identification with the Value Management profession.    The Institute grants membership at four different “grades”, reflecting the member’s attainments in Value Management.   On top of these grades, there is a specialist credential (“Registration”) that specifically relates to the facilitation of VM Workshops (see below).    The grades are as follows, with a few words to describe their significance in general terms:

Associate Member

interested in VM, may be working towards Member

Member   (MIVMA)

full professional standing and competent to practice general aspects of VM, including to assist a Registered VM Facilitator (see paragraph below this table).   However, the additional specialist credential of   RegVMFacil    must be held (and it must be current) if any Member (or Fellow) seeks to facilitate a VM workshop or to lead a VM facilitation team.

Fellow      (FIVMA)

recognised as a leader in the VM profession;  please note the comments about facilitation shown above as they also apply to the grade of Fellow.

Honorary Life Fellow    (HonFIVMA)

exceptional recognition for outstanding and sustained contribution to the VM profession

Separate from the grade of personal membership, a member with the grade of  Member or above may obtain additional recognition for satisfying specialist criteria in a particular aspect of VM practice (such as facilitation).   This specialist recognition (called “Registration”) is granted for only three years at any one time, and it may be renewed if the registrant can demonstrate that he/she is continuing to practice in the specialist field and that he/she has maintained the specialist expertise through continuing professional development.    Because this specialist Registration is considered separately from a person’s grade of membership, it is addressed in a different section of our web site:

Benefits of Personal Membership

In addition to their professional recognition, personal members have agreed to be bound by the Institute’s Code of Conduct, which recognises their commitment to ethical professional work.   Further, because there are disciplinary provisions to handle professional misconduct, members of the community (clients in particular) can have confidence in dealing with Institute members on professional VM matters.

Personal members all receive the Institute’s newsletter “The Value Times”, which contains information of interest to the VM Profession and to those in the community who use VM services.   Value Times also includes news about the Institute.

Personal members generally receive concessional prices for participation in activities organised by the Institute, such as conferences (usually every two years), professional development seminars and networking sessions organised by regional groups.   Some publications also have concessional prices for members.

Personal members with the grade of Member or above are entitled to vote on any matter put before a General Meeting, including the election of most of the Institute’s Office Bearers.

Each personal member receives a coloured membership certificate, signed and sealed,  suitable for public display in one’s office or reception area etc, testifying to his/her professional attainment and commitment to the Code of Conduct.

Applications

To apply for personal membership (or for an existing personal member to apply for promotion to a higher grade), you must print out, complete and lodge an Application Form and the Contact Details sheet.   These must be accompanied by additional material that you must prepare,  together with payment of a year’s subscription for the grade being applied for.   Applications are not considered until all required information is received.   All these requirements are set out in the Instructions for Applicants.    All the following documents are pertinent.

If you have an additional enquiry, please direct it to the appropriate Officer of the Institute (normally the Hon Secretary in the first instance).
